Moonfleet Manor, Fleet, Dorset

Playtime for all the family in a rambling country house

Hilly Janes

USP An ex-Navy masseur and fresh-from-the-farm organic egg facials are just two of the quirks at this something-for-everyone country retreat.

AMBIENCE Treatment rooms are simple, light and airy. Tinkly music is kept to a minimum. A new purpose-built spa is planned in the next five years. The Bear's Den is a free creche for children up to the age of 7.

EXPERIENCE An active family weekend with relaxation and pampering for the grown-ups. The therapists are mature, welcoming, well-qualified and professional. The pedicure and Bowen Technique style shoulder massage felt very reviving.

FOOD The hotel food, including local fish, is excellent for both adults and children. Sprogs have their own tea at 5pm. However, no food is available in the spa, just glasses of water.

IN CROWD Knackered Boden men and Whistles women who can afford to treat the family to an upmarket hotel break.

WALLET WATCH Deluxe one-hour pedicure, £28; full body Swedish massage, £35; aromatherapy facial, £34. From £195 a night for two adults and two kids, including dinner and breakfast for adults; kids' food is extra.
