Wayne Rooney (Manchester United, FOR): goal, 3 league points, 66 minutes
played.
Rooney shows no sign of slowing down, his goal in the 5-0 thumping of
Portsmouth on Saturday taking his tally for the season to 23 for his club,
which equals his previous best campaign for United. Considering the poverty
of Portsmouth's defending, he might have scored a few more had he stayed on
the pitch for the whole game, but fantasy players might be counting their
blessings that he was taken off with just under 25 minutes remaining given
that he's barely had a second's rest so far this season.
Didier Drogba (Chelsea, FOR): 2 goals, 3 league points, 90 minutes played.
Drogba scoring against Arsenal is almost becoming as predictable as Arsene Wenger bleating about anything that doesn't go his way. The Ivory Coast striker's two goals at Stamford Bridge on Sunday mean he has now scored 12 in ten starts against Arsenal, and on this form, it is hard to think his scoring spree is about to stop any time soon.
Matthew Etherington (Stoke City): goal, 3 league points, 90 minutes played.
If John Terry is looking for advice on how to turn his life around, he could probably do worse than have a quiet word with Etherington. Less than two years ago, Etherington amassed debts approaching £800,000 as a result of a gambling addiction while at West Ham United, his former club, but after attending Gamblers Anonymous meetings twice a week, he has got back on track and his football is benefiting as a result. The Stoke winger was at the heart of everything good his team did during their 3-0 win at home to Blackburn Rovers, teeing up Mamady Sidibe before scoring himself.
George Boateng (Hull City): goal, 3 league points, 82 minutes played.
Boateng's first goal for more than two years put Hull on course for a priceless victory against Manchester City at the KC Stadium and suggested that there is possibly some life in the old dog yet. Boateng clearly benefited from having a bright young 19-year-old by the name of Tom Cairney alongside him, but the former Middlesbrough midfield player was too good for a City midfield costing a small fortune. Players who haven't scored for ages often have a knack of scoring a few in a flurry before returning to old habits so Boateng may be worth a look.
Zat Knight (Bolton Wanderers): 1 league point, 90 minutes played.
Dispensed of by Fulham a couple of years back, Knight produced an outstanding performance in central defence against his old club at the weekend to earn Bolton Wanderers a point at the Reebok Stadium that would have been three had Kevin Davies not had a last-minute "goal" controversially ruled out. Knight has found himself back in favour at Bolton following the appointment of Owen Coyle as manager and can expect plenty more playing time now that Gary Cahill's season appears to be over.
