How England rated against Belarus

Tom Dart

Ben Foster

His third cap was only a limited opportunity to impress as he dealt mainly with back-passes. The first half brought only one easy save; the second a smart stop from Omelyanchuk. 6

Glen Johnson

Watching him is like having a holiday undermined by the feeling that you’ve left the door unlocked. Twice gave away possession in the first half, but fun to watch going forward. 6

Rio Ferdinand

We had all but forgotten about his occasional lapses of concentration until this season. This was a night to test his focus, if not his talent: did his job when called into action. 6

John Terry

Reliable as the linchpin of a defence that, in a wider context, should do better. Almost volleyed a goal near the end of the first half, but his effort was charged down. 6

Wayne Bridge

No question marks: he is “Plan B” personified. Comfortable and composed under scant pressure, but Johnson on the right highlighted how little Bridge offers going forward. 6

Aaron Lennon

Clearly capable of eviscerating Belarus and did once or twice, but he was tightly marked and saw little of the ball until the end of the first period and start of the second. 6

Frank Lampard

Licensed to go forward in Steven Gerrard’s absence and prowl around the Belarus box, but chances were rare. He did test the goalkeeper with a free kick after the break. 6

Gareth Barry

Mopping-up ability worthy of a Janitor of the Year award and had enough time to ping the odd perceptive forward pass, such as the through-balls for both Crouch’s goals. 6

Shaun Wright-Phillips

A chance to impress in the absence of Theo Walcott and the fit-again Joe Cole, which he took despite being on his unfavoured left flank. Tended to cut inside, as for his goal. 8

Gabriel Agbonlahor

Showed good awareness and cool to set up Crouch’s opener. Early on there was ample space on the flanks for him to dribble at goal, but Belarus tightened up after that. 6

Peter Crouch

Nothing new in him finding the net against minnows. He had not played for England since June but his brace took the player’s tally to 18 goals in 35 appearances. 7

Average rating 6.3 (4-4-2)
