Haitian toddler Redjeson Hausteen Claude plucked from the rubble

Graham Keeley

He must be the luckiest little boy in Haiti.

After two days trapped beneath the rubble of his own home, two-year-old Redjeson Hausteen Claude was rescued this morning.

The toddler was clearly shocked as he was pulled free by a joint Spanish and Belgian rescue team. But a broad smile spread across his face when he came face to face with his parents, Daphnee Plaisin and Reginald Claude.

Dramatic photographs captured the moment when Félix del Amo, a Spanish mountain rescuer and diver, is seen pulling the terrorised child from a collapsed house. Óscar Vega Carrera, a Spanish firemen, also helped to get Redjeson out of the rubble.

Juan Carlos Abad, head of the Spanish fire rescue team in Valladolid, northern Spain, told The Times: "I spoke to the team the night before the rescue. They told me the building was dangerous and there was leaking water, the structure was unsound but they thought there was life there.

"I haven't been able to talk them yet but we are very moved by what has happened and very proud of what they have done."

Salvador Blanco, a member of a fire rescue team in Castilla y Leon in northern Spain, told Spanish television that Haiti was the Spanish team's first foreign mission.

The three-man team, which is specially trained to rescue people from collapsed buildings, arrived in Haiti yesterday. They took sniffer dogs to help find people still hidden in the wreckage.

Mr Blanco said: "I spoke with them shortly before they left and they were very keen to help. Felix has worked for 14 years as a fireman. He is very nice but also disciplined."

The Spanish team, from Valladolid, are part of Gebocyl, a professional firemen´s organisation which is on 24-hour standby to help with rescue missions around the world.
